Ketamine Therapy

If you’ve tried everything and haven’t experienced lasting relief yet, ketamine therapy just might be for you.

We often hear from our clients at Sona Collective that before they started ketamine therapy they had tried almost every kind of therapy, but hadn’t yet experienced sustainable and noticeable improvements. Ketamine therapy provided real relief.

Ketamine therapy is a clinically proven therapeutic option for treatment-resistant depression, as well as a powerful tool for:

  • Improving anxiety symptoms

  • Managing addictive behaviors

  • Shifting negative beliefs

  • Nervous system reset

  • Spiritual growth

We offer ketamine therapy to both individuals and couples for deeper systemic healing.

What is Ketamine Therapy?

If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, ketamine therapy, also called “ketamine-assisted therapy,” is a powerful tool for exploring thought patterns, physical sensations, and beliefs that may contribute to your anxiety or depression through a more spacious and compassionate lens.

Ketamine has a pleasant dissociative effect, which means that when it’s combined with therapy, habitual emotional barriers and defenses take a backseat so that you can explore memories, emotions, and fears. For many, a ketamine therapy session feels like a deep nervous system reset; oftentimes it’s both relaxing and insightful.

In this state of non-ordinary consciousness, you may have a “peak experience” or feel like you can tap into your intuition. This can help you to access more healing wisdom to implement in your day-to-day life. During your journey, we connect with you through small somatic interventions (e.g. inviting you to share what’s happening in your body) to help you make meaning out of your experience and integrate the material that comes up.

It’s More Than Just a Fun Trip!

Ketamine creates an incredible level of plasticity in your neural pathways that supports long-lasting and effective changes to your belief systems and behavioral patterns. Research on ketamine shows that the real magic happens in the 72-hour window of neuroplasticity following your ketamine session.

During this time, your brain is more “plastic,” meaning it’s busy making new synaptic connections, which leads to the creation of new neural pathways. These new pathways are what relieve depression and anxiety. Integration is key after a ketamine session to reinforce this window of plasticity; it’s a good time to develop new healthy habits and release the old ones that no longer serve you.

Ketamine therapy is an amazing blend of science, mental health, and magic. After your sessions, you may feel like your body has reached a more manageable baseline—you don’t have to work so hard to feel good!

Intentions You May Choose to Get There

What to Expect

Getting Started

Consultation Call & Intake

First, we’ll schedule a 15-minute complimentary phone consultation. This allows us to get a feel for each other, and for you to learn more about ketamine and how it might serve you. If ketamine therapy is right for you, we’ll schedule your intake.

During your 60-minute intake, we’ll discuss a rough outline of your treatment plan, including the recommended course of treatment and what to expect. Our intake will also include gathering information about your family and trauma history. We also want to learn about your hopes, desires, and challenges as we embark on this journey together.

Connect With Your Therapist & Prescriber

Once we’re ready to move forward with ketamine therapy we will connect you with a prescriber who will meet with you for a medical intake and prescribe the ketamine. You are in charge of arranging this appointment and procuring the ketamine prescription before the first ketamine therapy session.

One of the most important aspects of ketamine therapy is… the therapy!

When you take ketamine, you surrender to an altered state of relational and psychological openness. For this reason, the best way to facilitate lasting and significant change is within a structured and supportive therapeutic relationship. We recommend treating your therapeutic journey as a holistic one that may include EMDR, somatic therapy, and other therapeutic modalities during the preparation and integration sessions.

During our intake and the sessions leading up to the first ketamine therapy session, we will discuss:

  • Your intentions for the experience

  • What to expect in the ketamine sessions

  • How to prepare for these sessions

  • Tools for integration

We suggest meeting anywhere from five to 10 times before you do a ketamine session so that we can build a trusting therapeutic container.

The Ketamine Treatment

The Ketamine Therapy Session

The ketamine therapy session itself will begin with establishing a “set and setting” that supports your nervous system, which may include:

  • A grounding practice

  • Intention setting

  • A simple ritual to open the session

You’ll take the sublingual ketamine and relax in the intentional space we’ve created until the medicine sets in. Depending on your dose and intentions for the journey, you may want to talk or you may want to go inward. In our experience, you will likely find yourself moving between speaking and introspection.

Throughout your experience, we will support you in staying connected to your body and the felt sense of your emotions. You may want to wear an eye mask to block out light, which can facilitate a deeper experience.

After your experience has ended, and with the time remaining in the session, we may discuss insights and downloads from your experience.

Please note:

  • Ketamine will create new neural pathways and heal your brain, all on its own, regardless of the experience you have in your journey.

  • Your ketamine therapy experience will be unique to you, and each of your sessions will likely be different.

  • On the day of your journey, please plan for the whole session to take three hours.

While it’s difficult to give a general recommendation for everyone, we usually recommend a minimum of three ketamine therapy sessions to create lasting changes in your brain and nervous system. You may consider six or more sessions for maximum results.

What Makes Our Ketamine Therapy Different?

Ketamine is a commonly used anesthetic in medical settings and has been included in the World Health Organization’s List of 100 Essential Medicines. In other words, it is very safe—it’s even used on premature babies. Ketamine has become a more common feature in therapy offices as a treatment for myriad symptoms related to trauma, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

You may have heard about IV ketamine clinics—this is not what we do. Sona Collective offers ketamine therapy with the therapy and an emphasis on integration. The difference between ketamine-assisted therapy in our office and receiving a ketamine infusion at an IV clinic is that we use a holistic, compassionate, and trauma-informed approach, which focuses on repairing relational wounds and therapeutically treating the trauma itself to achieve deeper and longer-lasting healing.

In our office, ketamine is a tool (one of many in the toolbox!) that helps you access deeper parts of your psyche and understand core material in a safe and comfortable “set and setting,” which refers to the environment and context in which you take the medicine, your intention, and the integration that follows. Trauma-informed ketamine therapy works because we tailor your “set and setting” to your therapeutic needs.

Ketamine Therapy FAQs

  • We accept credit, debit, and HSA cards. We will request that you provide your payment information in a secure client portal before our intake so that we can charge you upon completion of our session. We will provide an invoice each time a payment is processed and are happy to provide a Superbill upon request.

  • We’re an out-of-network provider, which means we do not bill your insurance company directly but can provide a receipt for the sessions you paid for called a Superbill, upon request. You can submit this to your insurance provider for any out-of-network benefits you may have and they may issue a reimbursement check. We recommend contacting your insurance company before beginning therapy to find out what your out-of-network benefits are.

  • It is hard to give a prescriptive recommendation to everyone, but we have found that ketamine therapy usually requires a minimum of three sessions to build momentum and create sufficient neuroplasticity. In order to create a safe and secure container (e.g. the therapeutic relationship), we recommend starting with five to 10 50-minute sessions to build rapport with your therapist and begin the holistic treatment plan.

  • $575 for 180-minute ketamine-assisted therapy session.

  • In our office, you will be taking sublingual ketamine, which means that you will be prescribed lozenges that dissolve in your mouth.

  • We request at least five days advance notice for 180-minute ketamine sessions. In the event of a no-show or late cancelation, we will charge half the full amount in the event of a canceled 180-minute ketamine session.
