Why Ketamine Therapy?

If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, ketamine therapy, also called ketamine-assisted therapy, is a powerful tool for exploring thought patterns, physical sensations, and beliefs that may contribute to your anxiety or depression through a more spacious and compassionate lens.

  • Ketamine has a pleasant dissociative effect, which means that when it’s combined with therapy, habitual emotional barriers and defenses take a backseat so that you can explore memories, emotions, and fears. For many, a ketamine therapy session feels like a deep nervous system reset; oftentimes, it’s both relaxing and insightful.

In this state of non-ordinary consciousness, you may have a “peak experience” or feel like you can tap into your intuition. This can help you access more healing wisdom to implement in your day-to-day life. During your journey, we connect with you through small somatic interventions (e.g., inviting you to share what’s happening in your body) to help you make meaning out of your experience and integrate the material that comes up.

    • Ketamine therapy is a quick treatment and has few side effects

    • Ketamine leads to neuroplasticity, meaning your brain will become more flexible and open to positive change

    • You can stay on your prescribed medication while undergoing ketamine therapy

    • Ketamine therapy has incredible success and remission rates of treatment-resistant depression and anxiety, among other trauma symptoms

    • Ketamine makes it a little easier to explore challenging memories, emotions, and core material that may otherwise be left unaddressed

    • To compassionately explore self-defeating patterns

    • To feel relief from treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and grief

    • To connect with God, Spirit, your Higher Self, or the Universe

    • To surrender and trust in life’s unfolding

    • To be able to step into the “witness perspective”

    • To feel safe in your body

    • To receive clarity around purpose and meaning

    • To feel connected to your ancestors

    • To simply be curious and present to whatever arises

Note: While setting intentions is helpful, it’s also important to hold them lightly! Ketamine is a medicine with its own intelligence, and a psychedelic journey isn’t one that we can control (more on this in our sessions).

Experience real relief from depression and trauma-related symptoms with ketamine therapy.

What to Expect

Consultation Call & Intake

Your journey begins gently and collaboratively. Our first step is simply getting to know you, understanding what you’re seeking support for, and making sure ketamine therapy is a good fit.

    • A 15-minute complimentary consultation to explore your questions and share how ketamine therapy works

    • If it feels right, we schedule a 60-minute intake session

    • A rough treatment plan is outlined, including what therapy will look like and how many sessions may support you

    • We talk through your history, your healing goals, and the challenges you’re currently navigating

    • This step helps us understand who you are and how to support you in the most attuned, grounded way

Connect with Your Therapist & Prescriber

Once we’ve decided to move forward with ketamine therapy, we shift into preparing your mind, body, and support system so you can enter the experience with clarity and confidence.

    • You connect with a medical prescriber for a required medical intake

    • You arrange this appointment and obtain the ketamine prescription before your first session

    • We begin building the therapeutic container through EMDR, somatic work, grounding tools, and other preparation practices

    • We explore your intentions, what to expect in the altered state, and how to prepare for the experience

    • We discuss integration tools to help you make meaning of what arises

    • Most people meet for 5–10 preparation sessions to build trust, regulation skills, and a strong foundation

The Ketamine Therapy Session

Your ketamine session is held in a slow, intentional space designed to support your nervous system and allow the medicine to work safely and meaningfully.

    • We begin with grounding, intention setting, and a simple opening ritual to establish your set and setting

    • You take sublingual ketamine and settle into the experience; you may talk at times, or you may turn inward

    • We support you in staying connected to your body and emotional landscape throughout the journey

    • You’re welcome to use an eye mask to reduce external stimulation and deepen the process

    • As the experience winds down, we spend time reflecting on insights, sensations, or themes that arose

    • Plan for the full session to take about three hours

    • Each journey is unique, and the medicine supports neural healing regardless of what your session looks like

    • We generally recommend a minimum of three sessions, with six or more often creating the greatest and most lasting change

What Makes Ketamine Therapy Different?

Ketamine is a commonly used anesthetic in medical settings and has been included in the World Health Organization’s List of 100 Essential Medicines. In other words, it is very safe. It’s even used on premature babies. Ketamine has become a more common feature in therapy offices as a treatment for myriad symptoms related to trauma, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

You may have heard about IV ketamine clinics. This is not what we do. Sona Collective offers ketamine therapy with the therapy and an emphasis on integration. The difference between ketamine-assisted therapy in our office and receiving a ketamine infusion at an IV clinic is that we use a holistic, compassionate, and trauma-informed approach, which focuses on repairing relational wounds and therapeutically treating the trauma itself to achieve deeper and longer-lasting healing.

In our office, ketamine is a tool (one of many in the toolbox!) that helps you access deeper parts of your psyche and understand core material in a safe and comfortable “set and setting,” which refers to the environment and context in which you take the medicine, your intention, and the integration that follows. Trauma-informed ketamine therapy works because we tailor your “set and setting” to your therapeutic needs.

  • It is hard to give a prescriptive recommendation to everyone, but we have found that ketamine therapy usually requires a minimum of three sessions to build momentum and create sufficient neuroplasticity. In order to create a safe and secure container (e.g. the therapeutic relationship), we recommend starting with five to 10 50-minute sessions to build rapport with your therapist and begin the holistic treatment plan.
